The market town of Pontypridd lies just 12 miles north of Cardiff. 'Ponty', as its known to locals, is famous for its old bridge, which at the time it was built (in 1750) was the longest single spanning bridge in the world. Its name means 'bridge of earth' and its claim to fame is that singers Tom Jones, and Sir Geraint Evans were born here.
Pontypridd is a thriving commercial centre rich in history and culture and an important landmark in Mill Street, the main shopping street, the stone railway viaduct. Ponty's train station was once claimed to have the longest station platform in the world and the town's main sporting team plays rugby in the Welsh Premier League.
