The Sun reported on Friday that a plot line involving a Coronation Street character turning towards Muslim extremism was “confirmed”.

But a spokeswoman for the show has strongly denied reports of what would be an extremely controversial storyline following the recent terror attacks in Paris.

“There are absolutely no plans to introduce a Muslim extremist or radicalisation storyline into Coronation Street, nor has there ever been,” she said.

According to a show insider, a radicalisation storyline had been briefly pitched by a writer at a meeting but had not been pursued, as is the case with plenty of potential plots.

The Sun claimed on Friday that a show source said: “Corrie always tries to replicate real life and we are never scared of tackling controversial storylines.

“There have been some real debates about whether it is the right thing to do, but if we can find a sensitive way to handle it that works before the watershed, then we will start to put the wheels in motion.”

While soaps are known for drawing on real life events in their plots, the timing would have been in extremely poor taste.
