HANSEL and Gretel isn’t a typical pantomime story but Christchurch Music Society took a gamble and it paid off.

The play centred on Heaven Zimmerman’s diabolical plot to sell her stepchildren Hansel and Gretel into slavery and into the hands of the evil Scary Berry and her sidekick Iago. Fortunately for the brother and sister duo, their doting father, a pair of friendly birds and the forest folk were around to lend a helping hand. Lots of laughs were had, particularly at the expense of Mr and Mrs Zimmerman’s relationship.

There was impressive singing and choreography throughout. The cast performed a mix of songs with original twists.

Credit must also be given to the talented ensemble, the meticulous production team and the tireless stagehands, without whom the play wouldn’t have been the success it was.

In typical pantomime fashion, the show ended with a comical rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas.

I can only imagine the show was as much fun to be part of as it was to watch.

The show continues until Saturday.
