FOLLOWING the success of Rock of Ages earlier in the year Young Venture Players were back with a festive offering in the form of Elf The Musical Jr. And there wasn’t a seat in the house.
Based on the popular comedy film Elf, starring Will Ferrell, the show was guaranteed to bring lots of Christmas fun from the off.
Stepping into the pointed shoes of Ferrell was 17-year-old Harrison Smith who played Buddy, a human raised in the North Pole by Santa Claus and his elves. The musical followed his journey to New York as he attempts to make a connection with his business guru father Walter (Kai Roche).
Harrison Smith’s mile-a-minute performance provided almost all of the show’s many laughs while stand-out musical performances came from Josie Ash and Oliver Meakin - playing Buddy’s stepmother and brother respectively – and the extremely talented Evie Brettell playing Buddy’s love interest Jovie.
All-in-all the show well and truly kick-started the spirit of the season in the auditorium, after all ‘the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear’ – and the cast certainly did just that.
