DIRTY Dancing, the musical adapted from the ever popular film, comes with a certain level of expectancy and one it delivers upon.

This production, directed by Federico Bellone and choreographed by Gillian Bruce, was completely sold out on its opening night at the New Theatre, Cardiff.

And well, all I can say from the audience’s reaction throughout, this show has to be called a hit! The atmosphere and involvement from the crowd only increased the excitement and buzz on the night.

The show delivered in true Dirty Dancing style; the musical was full of spice with its raunchy, sexy scenes. Most females in the audience eyes couldn’t wander from Johnny Castle (Lewis Griffiths) who played a strong, determined character.

The dancing was on another level where Penny (Carlie Milner) was exceptional with her flexibility and style. As a whole, the cast performed all dance routines excellently where you really felt part of the resort at the Catskill Mountains.

There was an uncanny resemblance with Katie Hartland playing Baby. She had everything from looks to her character spot on and it has to be said she made the show.

The creativity of the sets were superb especially when recreating the water scenes with Baby and Johnny – this I will leave as a surprise. Each set change was swift and cleverly done. However, I did feel that scenes were slightly rushed during the first half, but understandable with a lot to cram into one show.

The show ended in true style with the last dance of the season ‘I’ve Had The Time of My Life.’

This is a brilliant on-stage spectacle to Dirty Dancing. The show continues until Saturday.
