Porth is the gateway to the two Rhondda valleys as traffIc merges at this point. In common with much of Rhondda Cynon Taff Porth developed to service the coal industry. There were seven mines in operation in the 1900s within the boundaries of Porth and nearby Cymmer and Ynyshir.
The last to cease production was the Lewis Merthyr pit in 1983. When this closed, it was reopened as the Rhondda Heritage Park, depicting the history of the area. Porth was the location of the Corona works, a high profile soft drinks manufacturer, now a successful and innovative redevelopment as the "Pop Factory".
