Caerphilly is the principal town of the county borough with a population of approximately 30,000. People have visited the town for centuries to admire the town's immense Norman Castle which is the second largest in Britain - only Windsor is bigger. The town is also well known for its Caerphilly cheese (which is not made anywhere in Caerphilly these days but can be found in local supermarkets).

Caerphilly did not really start to grow until the start of the 19th century, even though the castle was built in 1271, the surrounding town remained very small (the population in 1795 was 200). The population has grown since, with a population explosion at the turn of the 20th century thanks to nearby heavy industry and mines at Bedwas and Senghenydd. Despite the collapse of heavy industry, Caerphilly has continued to grow as it has a number of industrial estates which are occupied by various companies.
