MORE volunteers are being sought to join First Responders in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Hengoed and Ystrad Mynach.

Community First Responders (CFRs) do not replace or alter the normal response of a paramedic in a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) or an Emergency Ambulance, but support the patient until it arrives.

Volunteers do not need first aid experience to join their local group as full training is provided.First

Responder Officer, Tony Rossetti added: "Every second counts when you are trying to save someone’s life and Community First Responder schemes are hugely beneficial in assisting the ambulance service to provide the best possible pre-hospital care for patients.

All training for volunteers who wish to take part in such an initiative is provided by the Welsh Ambulance Service.

"We’re currently looking for more recruits in the Blackwood, Caerphilly, Hengoed and Ystrad Mynach areas."

Community First Responders play an important role alongside frontline ambulance staff in making sure patients receive appropriate help quickly and efficiently, explained Chief Executive at the Welsh Ambulance Service, Elwyn Price-Morris.

"Community First Responders are very much part of the whole Welsh Ambulance Service family. They are a valuable support and I am personally proud to be associated with such dedicated life saving schemes in Wales," he said.

To become a First Responder you must be over 18 years of age, be physically fit and hold a clean UK driving licence.

Applicants need to successfully complete over 30 hours of training, and will also need to undergo a CRB check and Occupational Health check before being registered to the scheme.
