Just a dusting of snow in Newport and the schools are closed, why?
It was very rare for schools to close years ago yet it was the same snow that fell!!

I know the decision to close schools is outside of the Council's control but this strikes me as taking the mick.
Friday was clearly the right decision but to close after a very light dusting of snow is unacceptable.
Schools may argue on the grounds of health and safety but pupils are far safer in school than sledging

What I would like to know is how they think parents can just take a day off work at the drop of a hat. As a working parent i have no holidays to take and have just lost a 100% attendance record just because the school does not want to get a bad attendance record.

You shouldn't be blaming the schools, it's health & safety who are to blame! Also if a child slips and hurts themselves the schools may get sued! So it's also the people who say, 'Where there's blame there's a claim!' who are guilty also! When we were kids we trudged through the snow to get to school, if we fell we laughed, if we got hit by a snowball we threw one back, if we hurt ourselves we got patched up and carried on! Oh how times have changed!

I can not beieve it, when I looked at this page I was shocked to see so many Newport schools shut. They say the reasoning is, if x amount of staff are not able to attend as well as x amount of first aiders then they can not open, it actualy has nothing to do with the safety of the children getting to, using or leaving the school site. Newport should fine the schools who just couldn't be bothered to open, maybe they will think better of it next time.

Where I live in cwmbran there is at least 3 inches of snow fallen. The snow is forecast all day according to met office but not sure because it changes all the time.

all u people who are complaining about taking a day off work because your childs school is shut should be ashamed. I have 3 children and I will not risk taking my kids to school and risk them breaking bones on the way or even whilst they are there my childs health and safety comes before anything and so it should do with you rant over

gathin - not sure what you are trying to get at - the photo was obviously taken at an english medium school. English medium schools don't send out communication to parents bilingually so why would they have put up a sign that the school is shut in Welsh? If it is was a welsh medium school it would of course been bilingual. A bit of a non issue.

Obvious has absolutely nothing about anything. Hundreds of millions£ have been burnt with the Welsh language and it's supposed to be law and not an option or am I the only one that has been misgoverned by this atrocious waste of our public money? Maybe if we had a bit of common sense governing around here it wouldn't matter to me -but we don't -so it does.
Welsh councils would have bucket loads of spare cash to spend on the very people that it's exorted from without this useless cash cow!
I mean; how many of us speak Welsh fluently?? And I don't mean at some GCSE or A level 'cos that ain't fluent!

I don't think there are too many French, German or other 1st world inhabitants in the wonderful county of Gwent. Polish, Punjabi, Urdu, Pahtun, Arabic, Gujurati, Somali? Yes. Just no other Europeans in big enough numbers to justify giving them their own signs.

I'm off to France to tell the French to take down all their French signs and insist they speak English. I'm sure they'd be delighted. There are plenty of fluent Welsh speakers in Newport, you just don't know any. I don't know any one that is deaf in Newport but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I'm all for signs in other languages. I just the ignore the ones I don't understand end of story, no fuss, no moaning.

As for the schools being open after the snow, thank goodness it is now raining!
