Art prize winner Gerwyn Williams
TWO Caerphilly artists were named as winners in an art exhibition competition for people from across South Wales.
Almost 100 artists were at Y Galeri, Caerphilly, on Friday to find out the winners of the Open Art Winter Exhibition.
Gerwyn Williams, of Abertridwr, won top prize of £500 for his photograph ‘Disconnected’. Luke Barker, of Llanbradach, took second and £250 for his portrait of Kerry in oil and spray paint.
Third prize and £100 went to Pam Jones, from Cowbridge, for her sculptural piece in porcelain entitled ‘Somnambulism’.
The competition attracted more than 300 submissions which were whittled down to a shortlist of 130 which were put before a panel of judges.
As well as the winners, 13 artists were highly commended, including Mary Jones of Caerphilly for her acrylic of ‘Margam’, Sally Lloyd of Blackwood for Elephant’s Eye in acrylic and mixed media; Abigail Prior of Machen for her mixed media piece ‘New Shoots’ and Marie Varney of Machen for her hand-made felt stitched piece entitled ‘Earth’.
The exhibition runs until February 23 with artworks starting at £50. Y Galeri is open 10am-5pm, Tuesday - Saturday.
