Call for AMs oath to be to voters – not Queen Call for AMs oath to be to voters – not Queen

THE oath of allegiance taken by Assembly Members, should pledge loyalty to the Welsh people not the Queen, the Silk Commission has been told.

In evidence to the Silk Commission, which could recommend a constitutional shake-up, Republic Wales said elected AMs should give allegiance to voters not to the royal family.

The group has also recommended removing the obligation on AMs to seek permission from members of the royal family when debating possible legislation about their role.

The group also says the Freedom of Information Act should be amended allowing lobbying by the Prince of Wales on Assembly business to be made transparent and scrutinised by the public.

Currently, swearing an oath of allegiance to the monarch is mandatory for all Assembly Members.

Republic Wales wants the Silk Commission to ensure the legislative process in Wales is free from undemocratic influence by the royals.

Who cares?

They don't care what the voters think anyway, once they're in power.

These tedious minority academic crusties clearly think someone cares what they want.

I couldn't care less if they swore allegiance to a Lego brick. It's not like keeping-your-word is a priority for them is it?

These parochial tinpot Hitlers should remember they are part of a bigger picture. They should never get ideas above their station. GSTQ.

Good, why should anyone have to swear an oath of allegiance to Madge? Why should the Prince of Wales, someone who is unelected, be allowed to interfere in Welsh politics without the electorate knowing about it?

Why should lobbyists have influence when they aren't elected either? At least Charles doesn't have personal gain in mind which is more than can be said for Green Energy pushers and all the others who buttonhole our Gauleiters on a daily basis. As for the oath, as pointed out above its not like integrity keeps any of them awake is it? Who therefore cares who's name it's in.

My thoughts exactly. Why is a self interested lobby group giving evidence to this enquiry? They have no electoral mandate, just a point of view. I have a point of view but wasn't aware it was an open forum.

The Welsh people now include Islamofascists (the tendency seems to be to call them "British" people living in Cardiff, but because they have papers from this country and live here they can vote here) Should AM's vote allegiance to them? The Queen tends not to encourage others to cut off the heads of kidnapped and tortured people, so might she not be a slightly better bet Howie.?
As to Republics , who you want for your Pres? Dear old Bobby Mugabe, Flight Lt. Doe, Mussolini, "I did not have sex with that woman"-oh there's such a choice of wonderful men, all of them at one time or another "elected" politicians-"elected
" that great seal of sanctity. Hitler was elected, of course.....

'Hitler was elected of course'

As were the crooks Charles Haughey, Mitterand and a whole raft of corrupt Italian heads of state. Do we really want another slime-ball politico in a limousine. No thanks.

They don't have influence Martin and their approaches to the WAG are all recorded unlike Charlie's and how do you know that he has no personal gain. From what we know of his tax arrangements that he has tried to keep secret there is a lot of personal gain there. Keep tipping your hat to Madge but I will argue for democracy and I think you will find there are rather a lot of people who care who the oath is made too.

They don't have influence? Why is £2 billion a year spent on lobbying then?

And if Charles was interested in personal gain why would he hand over £100m a year to the Princes Trust? (And gain anything from Wakes? Do me a favour). None of the Royal family have yet been suspected of anything other than a speeding offence. Yet the list of elected corrupt criminal lying scumbags runs to volumes.
