THE Tour of Britain cycle race is to return to Caerphilly this year when stage five of the race finishes there.

The town will host the end of the gruelling 177 kilometres stretch from Machynlleth to Caerphilly, which includes two ascents of Caerphilly Mountain before the riders cross the finish line in the shadow of Caerphilly Castle.

Cllr Harry Andrews, Leader of the Council said, “We are delighted to be playing host to such a prestigious national event, which offers a real opportunity to showcase Caerphilly county borough to a worldwide audience once again this year”.

He added, “I have no doubt that our residents will get fully behind this event as they have so commendably in previous years, and line the streets in their thousands to cheer on the cyclists”.

The 2013 Tour of Britain will start in Peebles in the Scottish Borders on Sunday 15th September, finishing eight days later in central London on Sunday 22nd September.
