TORFAEN council spent £666,331.96 on consultants last year.

The council stressed consultants saved the authority money in many cases and all authorities needed consultants to bring them expertise they didn’t have.

But the leader of the main opposition Independent group, Cllr Elizabeth Haynes said: “Services are being cut, grants to some local organisations are being axed, yet the Labour-led Torfaen council, think it acceptable to spend over £666,000 in one year on consultants.

“The people of Torfaen are entitled to ask why thousands of pounds are being poured into the pockets of consultants.

This is an appalling way to spend public money even if we had a strong economy: that it is allowed to happen in times of austerity is absolutely scandalous.”

A council spokesman hit back: “Like all other local authorities, Torfaen uses consultants when in-house skills or resources are not available, or sometimes we are required to use them by external funders. Consultants can work closely with council staff and share their knowledge and expertise.

“Decisions to employ consultants will always take into account value for money and the best interests of Torfaen citizens.

“We are just starting a l review of our service priorities and spending in response to the massive financial challenge we face over the coming four years.

“Use of consultants will be one of many items that will come under the microscope.”
