A RESIDENT close to the site of yesterday's Newport shooting told of how she saw the partner of the dead woman appear at the scene. another said the day was "quite surreal".

The Seabreeze Avenue resident said: "About quarter past, half past nine I walked to the shops. A man ran up and said to the police officer, "That's my girlfriend's car and that's her ex-husband's car." He asked "Is my missus okay?" Then the police car took him away.

"It must have been her new boyfriend. He was quite broad, he had short hair. He was in his forties. I walked off, I didn't want to stay there and listen.

"There was no-on there then, just the cars and the police. They had already taken them away.

"It's scary."

Willenhall Street resident Zena Thomas, 37, lives with her four children a few doors down from the crime scene. She said: "I had people texting me and ringing. It's quite surreal. It's like something you'd see on TV, on The Bill. It was a strange day yesterday.

We didn't know them or know if they were from around here. It's quite surreal.

We've been here about 11 months. We like living here, it's pretty quiet. You get the odd police car but nothing like this. I have never known anything major like this, not on my doorstep anyway.

My daughter works in Spytty. She had to walk all the way round just to get out the street. At first I said "No, you're not going out anywhere.

When they took the cars away they had closed the boots."

A neighbour whose house overlooks the crime scene said: "When I opened the blinds the ambulance had gone. There were police.

The children were shocked to see so many police and cars there. They went to my in-laws' house. My little one was saying, "I'm scared, I don't want to live in this house any more." It's horrible, just behind my garden.

We just bought this house about five months ago because it's a nice, quiet and calm area. We came from Maindee. Now my children are saying we need to move from here.

The police spoke to us, but we didn't hear anything. The fan was on and the windows were closed."
