A MURDER investigation has been launched into the death of a six-week-old boy from Nelson after he was allegedly assaulted.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said officers were called to a report of a baby not breathing at an address in Nelson, Caerphilly, at 9.15pm on Friday, August 16.
It is understood the baby boy, who has not been named, lived with his mother in the Fairwater area of Cardiff, but had been at the Nelson address when the 999 call was made to say he was not breathing.
The baby was taken to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil and later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, but died there today.
32-year-old Michael Pearce from the Nelson area was arrested and charged on suspicion of assault before the boy died.
Pearce appeared at Caerphilly Magistrates Court on Monday charged with assault, and was remanded into custody to appear at Newport Crown Court on August 29.
