GWENT Police is taking part in a national week long campaign aimed at highlighting the work involved with alcohol related incidents.
As part of an Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) ‘In Focus’ week of action, officers across the force are working with local partners to target alcohol related crime and incidents and working with late night establishments to make sure that people are safe.
The week of action coincides with Freshers’ Weeks at universities across the UK.
Research shows that over a third of violent crimes (non-domestic) occur between 6pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights, and between 9pm and midnight on Sunday nights.
Last year, 43.4 per cent of non-domestic violence offences in Gwent occurred within 50 metres of a public house, bar or nightclub.
During the week officers are making joint visits to local pubs and clubs with trading standards, licencing and environmental health officers, as well as South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Door supervisor checks will also be completed to make sure that individuals are compliant with Security Industry Authority standards.
Chief Inspector Simon Jeffries, who is leading the campaign for Gwent Police, said: “Throughout the week we will be carrying out dedicated operations across Gwent and high visibility patrols in some of our hot spot areas.
“But we will also be using it as an opportunity to educate people, and we will be talking to young people in local schools and colleges about the dangers of drinking to excess and the consequences of their behaviour.”
Talks are being delivered in local schools throughout the week and officers will also be visiting local youth clubs to speak to young people.
Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Johnston, said: "I have made it a priority to work closely with young people to ensure their voices are heard so I am very supportive of any campaign that helps to keep them safe and make the right choices."
Crime prevention tips will be issued on the Gwent Police Twitter and Facebook pages throughout the week.
