A GWENT woman was caught up in the Kenyan shopping centre siege and shooting over the weekend.
Mum Lynsey Khatau, 23, from Pontllanfraith, was with her family when militants stormed the Westgate Mall in the Kenyan capital on Saturday.
She told reporters a gunman shot at her but missed and killed a man behind her.
At least 65 people have been killed in the siege including three soldiers. Six British nationals have been confirmed as among the victims.
Friend Stacey Rose said: “I heard she was caught up in it when it first started, I was really shocked. I know the family pretty well and I was at Pontllanfraith Comp with Lynsey.
“I’m friends with Lynsey on Facebook so I knew she was fine, but people in the area are still finding out about it, and realising there was a local girl involved in it. “ Mrs Khatau was with her husband and four-year-old son Caiz, were at the mall when Islamist al-Shabab militants attacked.
Pontllanfraith councillor Michael Adams said: “I don’t know Lynsey’s family personally but I will be making appropriate contact with them in the next couple of days.
“I did not hear about any of it until today – I don’t think people in the community have heard much about it yet.
“ I just hope Lynsey and her family are feeling much better than they were when they were caught up in the shootings, and I hope she will be making a speedy return home soon.”
The Somali Islamist al-Shabab movement said it carried out the attack in retaliation for Kenyan military operations in Somalia.
Kenyan forces are currently securing the Nairobi shopping as the stand-off enters its fourth day.The Kenyan Red Cross says 51 people are still missing.
