THE South East Wales Adult Placement Shared Lives Scheme is a newly developed, unique service that provides support for vulnerable adults across Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Torfaen, Monmouthshire and Merthyr Tydfil.
Across the six counties, approved adult placement carers provide a number of services for a range of vulnerable adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health problems or for older people.
There are three main services provided. Long term care offers an individual a permanent placement within a carer’s home. Respite offers short term stays in a carers home and sessional support involves taking individuals out into the community, or visiting them in their own home to encourage social contact and independence.
The overall aim of the scheme is to promote independent living within the local community. Each placement is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual and it utilises the skills and knowledge of each carer to help improve and promote independence for those that access the scheme.
All carers are considered self employed and work from their own homes to provide long term and respite placements, but if providing sessional support, carers regularly take individuals out into the local community or visit them in the individuals home.
