CHRIS EVANS MP visited Cwmcarn High School for a special assembly with students to mark its reopening.

After asbestos was found at the school in October 2012, the school underwent £1 million renovation work over fears pupils’ and teachers’ health could be affected.

Mr Evans, MP for Islwyn, said: “It is great to see the students of Cwmcarn back where they belong and I am delighted that the school has finally re-opened.

“Cwmcarn High School is very much a part of its local community.

“And the support which the entire town has shown during its closure has proved just how important the school is to people across Cwmcarn.”

Following the school’s closure, pupils were taught at Coleg Gwent’s Ebbw Vale campus, about 12 miles from Cwmcarn.

After the school reopened on Monday, January 6, its headteacher, Jacqui Peplinski wrote on its website: “It was lovely to observe the learners’ excitement as they walked around the school after 13 months and familiarised themselves with the environment.

“Year 7 learners visited the school on Thursday and they commented that it is cosy, homely and bright in Cwmcarn High School.

“It is time to put the last 13 months behind us.”
