Newbridge and Bargoed get regeneration cash

Campaign Series: REGENERATION CASH: Newbridge REGENERATION CASH: Newbridge

AN EXTRA £3.2m is being pumped into the continued transformation of Newbridge and Bargoed, it has been announced today.

Finance minister Jane Hutt made the announcement while on a visit to Newbridge to see improvements already made with backing from Welsh government and European Union funds.

It comes as part of Caerphilly council’s wider regeneration plans for the area, building on previous regeneration phases which included the development of Calzaghe Bridge as well as the renovation of the Newbridge Memorial Hall and Institute.

The £3m pedestrian footbridge was the first structure in the county borough to be named after living people and honoured the achievements of boxing legend Joe Calzaghe and his father and trainer Enzo.

This additional funding, which comes from the EU, will allow further physical improvements to get under way, and regeneration of derelict land for economic and community use.

In Bargoed, the funding will support the development of a new site for business as well as an urban, green park. A commercial improvement funding scheme will be available for local businesses in both towns to enhance the frontages of their premises.

The minister said: “The funding will help build on progress already made in creating an attractive environment to ensure the success of both towns. It will also boost private sector investment and contribute towards the long term economic prosperity.”
