A spokesman for Gwent Police confirmed that the incident yesterday afternoon was related to today's bomb alert.

He said: "The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended yesterday afternoon to assess the situation. Following a thorough investigation of the device the EOD decided to conduct a small controlled explosion.

"Where possible this kind of procedure is always undertaken in daylight hours hence delay in action being taken."

The spokesman said that by the time the investigation was completed yesterday, darkness had fallen.

Chris Powell, 42, of Howard’s Butchers in Risca, said: “It was bedlam for us – absolute chaos. My father had to go onto the road to direct the traffic. At one point, there were five or six cars doing three-point turns at the same time, beeping and all.

“It wasn’t panic at all, it was quite the opposite actually. Some people were annoyed that they couldn’t get through but at the end of the day safety comes first.”

His father, Howard Powell, was stood on the zebra crossing on Commercial Street for about an hour and a half, with the help of resident Sally Davies, before traffic eventually cleared.

Howard Powell said: “It felt like I was there for a while, it was a bit manic. I turned a lot of buses around.”

Very weird, if the "bomb" was handed into the police station, why are the bomb disposal team & robot pictured at the very top of station road right next to residential property?

Have to agree with you loose-cannon. Also an awful lot of contradicting information being reported from Gwent Police on here look at 1135 it states it was reported this morning yet at 3.28 Gwent police confirm related to yesterday afternoon where they assessed the situation and left it until today in daylight hours to detonate the item so surely at 1135 this morning they knew it was reported yesterday...about time the truth was told of what is or has been going on.

Maybe the photos were, but with the town centre closed off they conduct all activity in a small side street, what's wrong with the high street ?

If the police knew that the bomb squad was going to detonate the the device today, why didn't they inform the bus companies and the public earlier, so other travel routes could be used, instead of utter confusion.

True John. Why not tell local residents that this would take place the next morning. I don't believe the story that the police are telling the media. This all taking place so close to the parades on Saturday.... I'm guessing the police may have missed something then and are no trying to cover things up... as they are renowned for

All i've seen on here is aftermath of the incident and a small amount of what happened. Why is nobody asking why there was a bomb handed in? Who handed it in? Why did they have a bomb? Where was it from? When was it meant to go off? Why aren't we being told this? Surely it is more important, long term...?
