Minister visits Ystrad Mynach sporting excellence centre

A REGIONAL centre for sport in Ystrad Mynach welcomed Minister for Sport and Culture John Griffiths AM today.

The minister was joined by Cllr Harry Andrews, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough, Cllr Keith Reynolds, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services. Representatives from Welsh Football Trust and Coleg y Cymoedd were also shown the key features of the brand new centre which will be ready for use in May.

Minister for Culture and Sport, John Griffiths said: “This is an impressive facility which as well as providing a regional centre of sporting excellence will be a valuable community facility and a base for a wide range of activities beyond sport.”

Cllr Harry Andrews, added, “It has been incredible to see how this iconic development has progressed since construction started. It really has changed the landscape of Ystrad Mynach and will bring wonderful benefits to the community and the wider region.”

Cllr Dave Poole, said, “The completion of this facility truly highlights our commitment to encouraging residents to live more active lives. Although we have created partnerships with professional rugby and football teams, our community clubs will be permitted access to the impressive 3G pitches that this centre boasts.”

The Centre for Sporting Excellence features two grandstands, 2 state-of-the art, international standard 3G rugby and football pitches, extensive changing facilities, a conditioning suite and a community facility.

Agreements are already in place with the Newport Gwent Dragons, the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff City Football Club which will see elite athletes sharpening their skills and training at the centre. The Ystrad Mynach Campus of Coleg Y Cymoedd will also be a key partner and will make use of the facilities.

When not in use by professional teams or the college, community Rugby and Football clubs will be able to access the two outdoor, floodlit, 3G pitches for matches and training on a priority basis.
