TWO men will serve time in a young offenders institution after stealing £50,000 in cash from an elderly widow’s home in Nelson in broad daylight.

Cardiff Crown Court heard on Friday how Hayden Evans, 20, of Pontmorlais in Merthyr Tydfil, and Ricky Davies, 18, of Limeside in Oldham, entered the home of an 86-year- old, who was inside at the time, in July last year.

Alexander Greenwood, prosecuting, said the pair entered through an unlocked door, and Evans went upstairs to steal £50,000 cash, kept in a wardrobe because the woman’s late husband had not trusted banks.

The elderly woman was knocked over as the defendant rushed down the stairs and out of the house.

Both men admitted burglary.

Around £18,000 had been spent within a few days of the burglary on items such as a flat-screen TV and home cinema system. The rest of the money was never recovered.

Evans was given a two-and-a- half year detention in a young offenders institution and was ordered to pay £120 victim surcharge, while Davies was given an 18-month detention and training order in a young offenders institution and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge
