UPDATE: 3.52pm

THE man who fell from a car in Newbridge yesterday remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

Residents told of a "chaotic" situation with buses and cars were being forced to turn around on Bryngwyn Road in Newbridge.

A 38-year-old woman from the Newbridge area has since been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink driving. She remains in custody assisting officers with their enquiries.

Vehicles were being diverted through the back road of Pennar Lane for a couple of hours, residents said.

Don Bradshaw, 65, who lives on nearby New Bryngwyn Road, said: “There was a lot of traffic. It didn’t seem like there was anything blocking the road but there was a lot of police presence there. We had to come back through Pennar Lane which is a very quiet back road most of the time but it was so busy there [on Wednesday night].”

Newbridge councillor Gary Johnston pleaded for people to stop speculating about the incident, and said everyone should let the police carry on with their job.

He said: “It is, of course, very concerning when any accident happens in our area. But there’s too much speculation going around and I think for people on social media, unless they were there themselves, speculating is not the best thing to do. We really have to leave the police investigate what happened.”

The Labour councillor, who lives just off the town’s high street, praised the emergency services.

He added: “The response from the police was very, very quick. They were flying by the house here. I’d just like to remind people that this is not a regular occurrence.”

Gwent Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to contact Gwent Police by ringing 101 quoting log 359 09/04/14.
