Pair seriously injured after Ynysddu crash, A4048 re-opens

Two people are in a stable condition this morning with serious injuries after their car crashed into a tree on the A4048 near Ynysddu last night.
The man, 21, and a woman, 20, both from the local area, were both taken to the Royal Gwent hospital with serious injuries.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said they were called at 11.54pm following the crash which involved in a grey Rover MG.
The road remained closed while emergency services were in attendance and is being reopened now.
A nearby resident who did not wish to be named said he heard what sounded like a car driving at speed along the road at midnight last night.
He heard a sound like a car back-firing then silence.
Around 10 minutes later the emergency services arrived, and an hour later the street lights along the road were turned off.
He said the scene is near the end of Pontgam Terrace, Wyllie and involved what looked like a grey Rover 25 which had been wrapped round a tree on the driver’s side.
The A4048 has now re-opened.
Eyewitness reports say the A4048 is closed through Wyllie and Ynysddu.
Firecrews were called to a crash at midnight last night on the Wyllie bends between Ynysddu and Blackwood following reports of a car hitting a tree.
The car had left the road, she said, and a woman had been removed from the vehicle prior to the fire service arriving.
A man had to be cut out of the car, she said.

Slow traffic is reported in both directions between Pentwynmawr roundabout and the B4251 Newbridge Road junction.
