THE newly formed Nelson Belles Girls rugby team has seven representatives playing for the Newport Gwent Dragons under 18s team after just one season in existence.
Nelson Belles was set up with support from Sport Caerphilly and Caerphilly council’s Sport Development Team, who provided training equipment and coaches.
The team regularly have 28 girls training and playing matches for an U15 and an U18 team, and have played against teams from all over Caerphilly county borough, while having also entertained English touring teams.
Two of the Nelson Belles have also represented East Wales U18 Girls, where Cardiff Blues and Newport Gwent Dragons combine to play West Wales U18 Girls selected from the Ospreys and Scarlets regions.
Steve Williams, manager for the Nelson Belles, said: “Nelson Belles have a great sense of togetherness and have enjoyed great community support throughout the season. Many girls had never played before, but have really taken to the sport.
"Nelson RFC now has 28 girls participating on a regular basis in matches and training. Not bad considering we only started in September. Thanks Sport Caerphilly and the team of coaches for your help and support this season, it is very much appreciated, and I look forward to working together next year.”
Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “I am so pleased that we have been able to support this team in getting started and have helped nearly 30 girls access a sport that they may have thought they couldn’t play. Sport is fun and should be completely inclusive and I’m thrilled that clubs in our communities are offering everyone the chance to take part regardless of gender or ability.”
Nelson Belles train at Nelson RFC Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7pm and will be recruiting players from school years 9-13 for the forthcoming season. A number of events will be held during the summer including a Mixed Touch League and a Ladies and Girls festival in August.
