A PLAN to bring a cinema back to Bargoed has hit a major snag, councillors were told.

The town’s cinemas all closed by the end of the 1980s.

Previously there were cinemas at Hanbury Square and opposite the former Woolworth’s.

Caerphilly councillors at the regeneration and environment scrutiny committee received an update on the phase 2 of the cinema project for the town, which has proved more difficult than first anticipated.

In September 2012, the council’s cabinet approved plans for Odeon to be confirmed as the preferred tenant for the cinema, but following the tender process for the cinema development’s construction, a review said the delivery cost is likely to exceed the currently allocated project budget of £6.9 million.

But the leader of the council, Keith Reynolds insisted the council remains committed to ensuring the cinema development is brought to the town.

Cllr Reynolds said: “I want to assure the people of Bargoed and the surrounding communities that we remain 100 per cent committed to bringing a cinema to Bargoed town centre.

“We don’t currently have a multiplex cinema within the county borough, and, with a population of over 180,000 residents, it is a much needed leisure facility for our residents. We will continue to work in partnership with Odeon to bring this project to fruition.”

Council officers are in discussions with the Welsh Government and are preparing supporting information to establish the level of financial support that may be available.

“Once a way forward is agreed, both the council and Odeon will be issuing a joint statement and it is hoped that this can happen soon,” Cllr Reynolds added.

The committee heard that further funding from the government has enabled five additional projects to be undertaken as part of the redevelopment of Bargoed town centre.

Members heard how an additional £1.1 million funding announced in December last year has enabled five additional improvement projects.

The projects include improving road structures, demolishing derelict or unused buildings, and improvements at Hanbury Road car park.
