JOE Calzaghe is set to swap the hills of Newbridge for the Hollywood hills with a movie being made about his incredible career, the Argus can reveal.
The project, entitled ‘Mr Calzaghe’ is already filming and is taking a documentary approach to former Argus columnist Joe’s amazing boxing career that saw him retire undefeated and stay world champion for over a decade.
The film is being directed by a Pembrokeshire-born filmmaker Vaughan Sivell and made in conjunction with Gennaker; a film finance and production company who have already taken hours of footage of Joe and his father and former trainer Enzo.
The film crew will be at the Hall of Fame ceremony this week in upstate New York and are also filming Enzo at his family home in Sardinia.
Mr Calzaghe will also feature plenty of action from Joe’s career as the Newbridge puncher has the rights to his entire in-ring back catalogue. Joe showed the Argus the promo for the movie and the footage, mainly from New York, looked incredible.
Speaking of his delight at the project, Joe told the Argus: “It’s an honour, the film crew being around has been great, I’ve especially enjoyed watching back all the footage of my career, it makes you really nostalgic.
“It’s a proud thing for me, it’s nice to be remembered and respected and I still have fans who watch my fights back and they will live on.
“I am very proud I was able to box on the highest stage and to share it with my dad.
“And now hopefully people will be interested by the journey we had together and will get more on an insight into my career.
“I think our story is pretty unique and look what we did. I always said someone should make a film about it and now they are.”
