TWO TEENAGE girls charged with conspiracy to commit murder at Cwmcarn High school were re-bailed.

The two girls were due to answer bail this week, but Gwent Police have confirmed they have been re-bailed until June 25.

On May 1, the two female pupils, a 15-year-old girl from Newbridge and a 14-year-old girl from Risca, were arrested at the school.

The 15-year-old girl from Newbridge was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, possession of a bladed article on a school premises and conspiracy to commit murder. The 14-year-old girl from Risca was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Speaking at the time, a Gwent police spokeswoman said: “”Nobody was harmed as a result of the incident, and the matter was resolved peacefully.”

It is understood the girls were arrested after concerns about behaviour were reported, and a knife was discovered in a bag. It is also understood the threat to kill allegation involved a teacher, named locally as maths teacher Alison Cray, but that no confrontation took place.

Both pupils have since been excluded from the school.

A statement on Cwmcarn High school’s website, posted the following day, assured parents and pupils “concerns were dealt with swiftly” and said: “There was no risk to any staff or learner and the relevant support services were contacted as a precautionary measure.”

The chairman of governors at Cwmcarn High School also praised staff, pupils and parents.

Gary Thomas said he supported the letter released by head teacher Jacqui Peplinski and said all had responded “swiftly” to the situation.

Mr Thomas said: “I am very proud of the school and particularly the way in which the pupils are educated to be responsible and report any concerns immediately; we are educating our pupils to be responsible citizens.

“There is mutual trust and respect between the learners ensuring that everyone is safe and happy in our successful school.”
