BLACKWOOD Golf Club celebrates its centenary year this week with a family fun day on Saturday.

The golf club in Cwmgelli opened in June 1914 with a handful of members and increased its membership to more than 300 in 1989.

The centenary committee have made mugs and plates to commemorate the 100 years of the club. They have also produced a book which has now been added to the United States Golf Association Museum.

John Goldsworthy, secretary of the club, said: “It’s amazing to celebrate our centenary year, we are all quite proud to be members here. We will be kicking off the celebrations with our family fun day on Saturday.

“I have been a member since 1992, it’s a very sociable club. A member has manufactured a Japanese bridge for the garden to commemorate the occasion.”

The first secretary of the club was J.E Treharne who was also a founder member and owner of Blackwood Foundry. The club suffered a fire in March of 1964 where most of the old clubhouse was destroyed and was re-built in 1966.

The fun day on Saturday will start at noon and the centenary golf week starts on July 7 which will consist of golf competitions for all categories.
