A NUMBER of commemorative events are being held across Caerphilly county borough over the coming months to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the war, and to remember all the men, women and children who were affected, schools, community groups, libraries and the county borough museum, The Winding House, will host a programme of commemorative events and exhibitions.

The events are:

Now until June 1 2015 – The Winding House have unveiled their next main exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI.

“Our Duty to Bear” – The First World War and Caerphilly County Borough allows visitors to the museum to discover the impact of war on men, women and children from Caerphilly County Borough.

From the Western Front to the Home Front, the exhibition explores local experiences of the War through carefully curated objects, images, film and sound with personal and poignant loans from the wider local community forming a central role. It is part of the Imperial War Museum’s First World War Centenary Partnership. For more information visit www.windinghouse.co.uk.

August 5 – Also at the Winding House is a project put together by pupils in Years 5 and 6, who this year set up an extra curricular history club called Ty’n y Wern Detectives. Using the internet, archive footage and documentary evidence, the project group researched the origins of WWI and discovered the main events and battles. They linked with a school in France and then turned their focus to the local men and women who lost their lives during WWI.

August 10 – The Maesycwmmer Village Partnership has sponsored a small garden in the shape of a poppy and containing poppies.

The garden is set to be dedicated on Sunday August 10, the closest Sunday to the actual date of the centenary of the break out of WWI.

August 12- 23 – The Van-guard Centre in Caerphilly will put on an exhibition and live performances to commemorate the centenary of WWI.

The exhibition will run Tuesday – Saturday 11am-3pm and Sunday 12am-4pm. The performances will run on Saturday August 16 at 1pm and Friday August 22 at 4pm. September 15– Nelson Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 2:30 – 4pm.

October 3 - Bargoed Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 3-4.30pm

In November, date TBC – Blackwood Miners’ Institute will host a play produced by Lewis School Pengam and professional playwright Larry Allen, with a song by singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, fresh from her songwriting with Ed Sheeran. A grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund has allowed pupils to work with letters that were sent to the school from pupils who were in the trenches during WWI, which will be the focus of the play. The play will also focus on the conscientious objector Morgan Jones, another former pupil of the school. November 11 – To mark Armistice Day White Rose Primary School and Phillipstown Primary School will march through New Tredegar with two large banners made entirely of individually printed poppies that 300 children from both schools were involved in making.

November 19 – Blackwood Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 2-3.30pm

December 12 - Risca Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 10am – 12pm (includes a 30 minute break for refreshments)

January 14 2015 - Rhymney Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 5-6.30pm

February 4 2015 – Ystrad Mynach Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 1-3.30pm

March 11 2015 – Caerphilly Library will host a talk on WWI to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WWI. Come along 2-3.30pm
