A CAERPHILLY man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following an alleged assault outside a pub in the town.

Jake Mark Sweeney, 26, suffered serious head injuries folllowing the attack which is alleged to have happened outside the Irish Tymes pub on Station Terrace, Caerphilly in the early hours of Sunday 24th August.

Jake was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff but died yesterday afternoon.

The man arrested, a 23-year-old from Caerphilly, who was originally held on suspicion of GBH with intent and released on police bail pending further enquiries. He has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

Two further men, both aged 21 from Caerphilly, were arrested on suspicion of affray and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

DCI Roger Fortey leading the investigation said; “This is an extremely tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a young man’s life. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the Irish Tymes pub between 1-2am on Sunday 24th August, you may have information that could assist. Please get in touch by calling 101.”
