UPDATE: 5.21pm

The village of Oakdale, where Cerys Yemm’s family live, has been left stunned after the former sales assistant was found dead at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Ms Yemm, who went to Oakdale Comprehensive School and later Coleg Gwent to study Health and Social Care, used to work at father Dean’s pub in Abercarn, the New Inn.

She then worked at the Next clothing store in Newport Retail Park where she was described as “a very popular member of her team”.

Councillor John Evans, for Penmaen ward, said: “My heart bleeds for the family. She’s young enough to be my grand-daughter, it’s really upsetting.

“All the community is stunned by the sad news, you don’t expect this in the Valleys.

“They are a local family and I am a local boy. We are a very close community and it hurts me to be talking about what has happened.”

In Argoed, locals have been expressing their shock at the double death, while flowers have been laid by the entrance of the three-storey building.

Argoed resident Colin McGregor, 85, said he was not surprised that someone had died because "it had been a long time coming".

"Obviously I didn't expect anything as awful as this but something was going to happen sooner or later," he said.

"Some of the residents [at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel] are alright, but if you ask anyone in the village, there is always trouble with that place."
