A GWENT AM has welcomed the news of a serious case review into the Argoed murder - but said he wants questions answered about the hostel where the killing took place.

William Graham, AM for South Wales East, said he is pleased the Ministry of Justice has pledged a serious case review following the murder of Cerys Yemm, 22, by Matthew Williams, 34, last week.

The review will examine the circumstances of Miss Yemm’s death, the management of Williams following his release from prison and whether steps can be taken to improve public protection.

But Mr Graham said: “References should be made to the halfway house, asking questions about how it is staffed and the security involved.”

It is understood the Sirhowy Arms Hotel, where Cerys Yemm was attacked, serves as a temporary home for offenders who have recently been released from prison.

Mr Graham said he was pleased the Ministry of Justice was to begin a review. He said: “I am pleased but the results must be made public and I think also we want to know from the police, once they have completed their internal investigation, about their own officer.

“The general public must know the lessons to be drawn from this case. Everybody will learn more as time goes on.”

Serious reviews are immediately launched if a serious offence is alleged to have happened within 30 days of a person leaving prison or is on licence.

The ministry said Williams had served a sentence and was not on probation at the time of the incident. They have not confirmed details of his convictions.
