The penultimate Scottish Harps concert juxtaposed two players who blend an awareness of their own tradition with both outward- and forward-looking attitudes so refreshing in an often conservative and self-protective musical coterie.

In an opening set of considerable charm Wendy Stewart drew on Latin chant, Finnish and French influences as well as playing tunes literally from her own backyard, the slightly

staggering Wallaceton Bridge and an excitable Maggie's Damfall showing humour and inventive writing.

Savourna Stevenson's contribution may well prove the triumph of the series. A kind of greatest hits, stretching back to the still-catchy intro to her Tweed Journey, these pieces of African, South American, ragtime, jazz, and bluegrass providence showed her harmonic depth and showcased her highly-evolved but never gratuitously showy musicianship.
