Scottish rockers Travis last night launched the holiday weekend in style, with an intimate free gig in a Glasgow record store.

Around 200 fans queued outside Fopp on Union Street to catch a glimpse of the band, who were back in the city to promote their new album, Ode to J Smith.

Anne Catto, 46, had travelled from Fraserburgh to see the band live for the 28th time.

Attending the gig with her 26-year-old daughter, Janine, she said: "We've both been big fans since 1997, when we saw Travis supporting Oasis, and after this we'll see them again tonight at the ABC.

"We've met the band a few times, and they're really nice guys. But this is definitely the most intimate gig we've been to."

Speaking before the group took to the stage, bassist Dougie Payne promised that the new album would be a return to the band's musical roots.

He said: "The new stuff is louder, edgier, much rockier."

Despite the cramped surroundings, Travis delivered a rousing set that mixed old favourites like Sing with new material.

Ode to J. Smith will be released on Monday.
