A preliminary hearing will be held in Dumbarton on February 1 and the full inquiry will begin at a later date.

The inquiry into the Clostridium difficile outbreak at Vale of Leven hospital in Dumbarton is being led by retired judge Lord MacLean.

Fifty-five patients at the hospital were laid low by the bug between December 2007 and June 2008, 18 of whom died.

The bug was blamed for nine of the deaths and was said to be a contributory factor in the other nine.

The preliminary session will hear from lawyers for key participants in the probe ordered by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.

Officials said: “While focusing on the Vale of Leven hospital, Lord MacLean will be able to refer to other experience of C.diff infection within and beyond Scotland to help inform recommendations in light of the lessons identified from the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.”
