A GLASGOW doctor has been stabbed by a patient in her surgery.

Dr Helen Jackson, 56, was with an elderly patient at the Hyndland Surgery in the West End when she was attacked just before 10am today.

She was stabbed three times in the stomach, with one of the wounds being described as "serious".

Paramedics rushed to the Hyndland Road surgery, which was busy with patients, and gave the doctor emergency treatment.

She was then taken to the Western Infirmary where staff have managed to stabilise her condition.

Dr Jackson's brother Paul also works at the three-doctor practice.

Despite the horrific incident, the surgery was still open at midday with patients collecting prescriptions.

It was later closed for one hour "due to unforeseen circumstances".

Staff at the surgery refused to comment.

But patients said they were stunned when ambulance crews arrived to treat the doctor. One woman said: "Helen's a lovely doctor. It is such a good practice.

"I hope she is doing fine and that she will be OK."

Moira Esplin, who lives next door to the surgery, said: "Although I am not a patient, I know the doctors. This is a shocking thing that has happened."

A police spokesman said: "We received reports of a woman being assaulted in a surgery in Hyndland Road.

"The 56-year-old has been taken to the Western Infirmary. Our inquiries are continuing."

It is understood a 75-year-old man is being quizzed by detectives.

A health board spokeswoman said: "The NHS across Greater Glasgow and Clyde is shocked and concerned about this reported assault on a GP at a Glasgow surgery.

"A full police investigation is now under way and we have been in touch with the surgery to offer our support and assistance."
