Watford are currently on course to win the Championship title as Matej Vydra’s 16th goal of the season as put the Hornets 1-0 ahead against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Golden Boys have dominated the opening period and created countless chances, however, only one has been taken.

It was a simple goal for the Czech Republic international who headed into an empty net from six yards after Troy Deeney had been denied.

Watford head coach Slavisa Jokanovic made three changes to his side. In came Marco Motta, Miguel Layun and Vydra.

Juan Carlos Paredes and Odion Ighalo dropped to the bench while Adlene Guedioura’s loan spell from Crystal Palace ended during the week.

Watford started brightly and thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Deeney was brought down as he attempted to go round Chris Kirkland.

Referee Lee Probert, who wrongly sent off Gabriele Angella against Bournemouth in January, waved away the Hornets’ appeals.

Kirkland then denied Vydra’s powerful strike from the edge of the box as the Golden Boys pushed forward in search of the opener.

And, in the 25th minute, they found it. Deeney was played through but his low shot was saved by Kirkland.

The ball rebounded into the path of Vydra who had the easy task of heading into an empty net.

“We’re going to win the league” chanted the Watford supporters. Vydra’ goal put the Hornets on course but they weren’t content with a slender lead,  especially as Bournemouth led 2-0 at Charlton Athletic.

Anya came close to doubling the advantage with a shot which ended in the side netting. Angella then headed over before Almen Abdi steered a volley from ten yards wide.

The midfielder was presented with another chance five minutes before the interval as Motta broke behind the Wednesday backline and slid the ball across goal.

However, the Swiss maestro was again wasteful and fired over from 12 yards.

The final action of an enjoyable first half saw Layun drag a shot from distance comfortably wide.

Watford's players and fans know that if the scoreline doesn’t change in the second period, the Hornets will win the Championship title for the first time in their history.
