GORNAL Athletic are hoping their youth set-up can be help drive the club’s push for success in the coming seasons.

The Peacocks’ Under-18s manager, Lee Glasby, has set his coaching team a new three year plan to bring through more youngsters that could cut their teeth in the first team.

The end of the current youth campaign will mark the end of the previous three year plan that has seen five players sign for the first team and four making debuts, most notable Liam Hickman who was taken on full time by the West Midlands League side and continues to thrive under boss Andy Wyton.

Gornal’s youngsters are currently in second place in the Midland Junior Premier League, which is widely regarding as the best youth league in the area with teams from all corners of the Midlands competing to a very high standard.

Next season will see Glasby and his vastly experienced level three coach Kev Weston entering the Midland Football League under-21 division.

“Our aim is to continue to develop all of our players over the next three seasons to a point that every single one will be at ready to play at the highest level possible,” said Glasby.

“This season has shown that the youth side has the correct development plan, with lads playing for the first team and not looking out of place. With the backing of the chairman Kevin Williams and a great partnership with Andy Wyton and Jason Tonks this will continue with players progressing when ready and giving more competition for places within the first team.”

As with every season, Glasby holds open sessions for anyone who wishes to attend training. He is currently looking for several more players in all positions.

Meanwhile, Gornal’s first team ended their season with a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Malvern Town.

The loss meant they failed to claim second spot ahead of AFC Bridgnorth.
