GIRL guides from all across Gwent met Prime Minister David Cameron during a week of volunteering at the Royal Welsh Show last month.

More than 30 girls from Gwent, and seven leaders, were part of the team from Girlguiding Cymru who helped out at the Royal Welsh Showground from July 20 to July 23.

The girls were from Chepstow, Newbridge, Cwmbran, Oakdale, Shirenewton, Goytre, Abertillery, and Caldicot, and took on jobs at the show including encouraging showgoers to take part in sports sessions, speaking to the public about their guiding experiences and volunteering as runners for the judges.

The girls met the Prime Minister when he dropped in to the show on Wednesday July 22.

Fourteen-year-old girl guide Molly Waters said: "It was great to meet David Cameron, he was really friendly and asked us what we’d been doing and where we had been helping out.

“I’ve had such a fun week volunteering and helping out with the animals."

The Royal Welsh Show had record breaking attendance with 241,971, the highest it’s been in its 111 year history.

Hannah Lidgett, 13, said: “I’ve been a member of Girlguiding for three years and it’s been the best time ever. The Royal Welsh Show has been lots of fun but tiring too because we’re up at 5.30am everyday.”

Girlguiding Gwent’s county commissioner, Sue Kirby, said: “It’s great to see so many girls working so hard around the show ground and taking to the public about their wonderful guiding experience, I’m really proud of them.”
