A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after his car allegedly knocked down and seriously injured a pensioner in Brynglas last night, police said.

Bryn Bevan road was closed from when the accident occurred just after 11.30pm until 3.30am this morning.

The 34-year-old driver of the single car involved has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is currently in police custody.

He stopped the grey Renault Megane people carrier following the collision, which police said knocked the 75-year-old Newport man to the ground.

A police spokesman said: "An elderly gentleman was knocked over. He is in the Royal Gwent Hospital being treated - his injuries are not believed to be lifethreatening."

The ambulance service were called to the scene as well as police and the road was closed for around four hours whilst collision experts investigated the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the "serious road traffic collision" that occurred at approximately 11.37pm. Anyone who may have seen the collision, vehicle or pedestrian can contact them on 101 quoting log number 546 10/8/15.
