SHOPPERS in Blackwood queued up for the official opening of Aldi’s newly relocated store yesterday.

The new supermarket opened at Blackwood Gate Retail Park yesterday at 8am after moving from the old site in the town's High Street.

The 1,400 square metre shop has created six new jobs in the local area and is the eighth Aldi store in Gwent, with others in Abergavenny, Ebbw Vale, Cwmbran, two in Newport, one in Risca and one in Tir-y-Berth near Pengam.

Six new jobs have been created for the local Blackwood community and the supermarket chain is still looking for people for roles assistant store managers and store assistants.

Caerphilly councillor Nigel Dix campaigned to change the planning consent on the original Blackwood Gate Retail Park site to enable retailers selling food to open up there.

When the news was announced that the Aldi store was coming to Blackwood, he said: “We ran that campaign and here we are a few years later and it's come to fruition. Jobs are being created.”

Lee Brass, Aldi store manager, said: “The team and I enjoyed meeting our new customers this morning, and we are really pleased with the turnout.

“We are looking for driven and passionate individuals to join our team in Blackwood and the surrounding areas.”

Anyone interested in jobs can visit the website or pop in store.
