POLICE are appealing for information after a man and his dog were assaulted on the canal bank off Malpas Road in Newport.

The incident occurred at around 10.20am on September 27.

The man was walking his dog along the canal in the direction of Rogerstone, and sat down on the wall by the first canal lock.

A male jogger ran past and the dog barked.

The jogger then started to kick the dog, shouted at the owner and grabbed him around the neck making further threats of violence, before running off.

The victim was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital as a precaution and has since been released. The dog is uninjured.

The offender is described as being white, aged approximately 55–60 years old with grey hair and was clean shaven.

He was of medium/athletic build and was wearing dark navy bottoms and top, and possibly white trainers.
