A BLACKWOOD author has released memoirs exploring his experiences of being bullied for being gay as a teenager.

Scott McGlynn, 28, has released Out, an autobiographical story reliving his adolescent years growing up in South Wales and “learning to accept his true self”.

The writer grew up in Barry and studied in Penarth before establishing himself as celebrity blogger in Cardiff, with roles on MTV and X Factor.

Currently living with his partner in Croeso Square, Blackwood, Mr McGlynn’s story was snapped up by an American publisher and his mission is to end bullying one and for all.

“The bullying started when I went into secondary school aged 11 and involved a lot of horrible comments — it was a bit of a shock,” he said.

“Things didn’t change until I moved to Cardiff in the late 90s when there were massive changes in perceptions towards sexuality.

“Writing the book felt like therapy in a way as it brought back some of those memories.”

The author believes that bullying is still a major problem in schools because social media.

He explained: “I think it’s harder in schools now as social media means you can never really escape from bullying, as things are posted online.

“In the future I want to go to schools to discuss these issues with pupils and I’m currently in talks with people in London to start an anti-bullying campaign.”

Looking forward, the author hopes to write a book exploring gay and transgender relationships and to inspire people of all walks of life and ages to be proud of who they are.

He added: “For anyone who is being bullied my main message to readers is complete honesty.

“I didn’t fully come out to my parents until I was 24 and it is important to realise that some people will never fully accept it.

“But if you are being bullied, tell someone you can trust and don’t go through it alone.”

The author will hold a book signing at Evi Ebbw Vale on Tuesday, April 5 between 12pm- 2pm.
