THE partner of a Newbridge dad assaulted on the weekend has spoken out against the attackers who “left him for dead”.

Adam Carnell was left with a fractured eye socket after being attacked near Blackwood’s Texaco and Esso petrol stations on Saturday (June 4).

Gwent Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service responded to a report of an unconscious man lying on Blackwood High Street at around 2.30am, with 26-year-old Mr Carnell taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital.

He has since been released, but Kayleigh Louise Jones, his partner, is worried that the injuries may have cause permanent damage to his sight.

Speaking about the incident, the 28-year-old said: “I was woken up when I heard a knocking at the door and I thought it might have been Adam but it was his grandad and mum.

“They had received a call from him saying 'I’m going to be beaten up by three boys’ and we all rushed down to the area where he said he was.

“We found him lying in a pool of his own blood and unresponsive.

"I thought he was dead.

"He later told me all he could remember was the bright lights of the garage and then waking up in the ambulance.”

The Lloyds TSB bank worker, who lives with Mr Carnell in Blaen-Blodau Street, Newbridge, said she feared that the brutal attack could have killed the father to her two children, aged three and 11-months.

She added: “When he opens his eyes at the minute they are painful and his vision's all blurred. He’s in agony.

“I don’t know what happened that night but no one should have the right to beat him and leave him for dead. I think that they took it too far.

“They could have killed him and it has really annoyed me as we have two babies. It could have been a lot worse.”

Mr Carnell will receive further treatment to assess how severe his injuries are.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray following the incident and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said enquiries are ongoing.
