ISLWYN’S MP Chris Evans has joined a growing group of Gwent MPs calling for Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn to resign.

Posting on his Twitter account, Mr Evans revealed the letter he sent Mr Corbyn stating that he had “threatened the unity” of the labour party, with Corbyn-supporters driving a “deep wedge” between Labour MPs and the grassroots.

Citing the upcoming general election, Mr Evans also outlined the importance of the Labour party being seen as a “credible and united alternative Government for the British people”.

“Thousands of Labour supporters, MPs, AMs, MSPs and MEPs gave up their time to pound the doorsteps for Remain during the referendum,” he said.

“Knowing now that your office was working against us, for Brexit, is a total betrayal of the Labour Party and the British people who were looking to you for guidance.”

The MP joins the wave of anti-Corbyn sentiment in Gwent, which has seen both Caerphilly’s MP Wayne David and Torfaen’s MP Nick Thomas-Symonds resign from Labour’s shadow cabinet.

Mr Evans added: “Having a mandate does not mean disregarding the people you need to work with day to day.

“It also does not mean that you are above resigning if you are proved incompetent as a leader.

“Britain needs a strong opposition now more than ever. Your position is untenable. You must resign and make way for a new leader who can start to repair the damage that you have done.

“Labour and Britain deserve better.”
