A FIRE engine was damaged last night after youths in Newport starting throwing bricks and stones.

A crew from Duffryn was called out to a bin fire at 11.11pm on Partridge Way by Duffryn Infant School and had to rely on support from Gwent Police after coming under attack.

The group of around seven, were believed to be starting the fire by tearing down nearby fencing.

After leaving the scene a first time at 11.24, the fire crew were called out again at 12.35am and remained at the scene with police officers until 1.20am this morning.

A South Wales Fire & Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called out more than once and called out the police as there were seven youths hanging around. They were setting fire to rubbish and fencing.

"They were throwing very large stones and bricks which have damaged the fire engine and just missed a firefighter, which could have been serious."
