CALLS to a charity which helps older people increased by nearly ten per cent this winter.

Age Cymru answered around 4,700 calls to its advice line between December 1 and February 28 - a nine per cent rise compared to the same period last year.

Money and benefit issues were the most common reason for calling, with other issues including non-residential care, housing, residential care and health and disability.

Gavin Thomas, services manager at Age Cymru, said: “The increase in calls to our advice line this winter demonstrates the need for this free, confidential and expert service.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of older people contacting the service and also, in the numbers of people calling on behalf of older people, such as families, friends and carers.

“Whilst it’s reassuring that people are turning to us for help and advice, we know that there are many more who are still unaware of the additional assistance and support that could be available for them or their loved ones.

“As we leave winter behind for another year we would urge anyone who is worried about themselves, or an older family member or friend, to get in touch with us.”

Last year, Age Cymru Advice helped nearly 10,000 older people and tackled more than 17,000 issues.
