A JUSTGIVING page set up to help a dying mum make “happy memories” with her family has raised more than £5,000.
As the Campaign previously reported, Dawn Wilson believed she was in remission from breast cancer up until three weeks ago when she discovered a lump.
“I went straight to hospital and was told it had returned and is incurable,” she said.
“They told me that if treatment isn’t successful I’ll be here less than a year.”
A JustGiving page - which aims to raise £10,000 - was subsequently set up and has so far gathered £5,209 for the family.
Mrs Wilson, who grew up in Caerleon but now lives in Hengoed, said that she had been “touched and moved” by the generosity shown.
“They have taken the time not only to donate, but to send such beautiful messages,” said Mrs Wilson.
“Those mean a lot to me and especially in the dark days ahead they will remind me just how many people are praying and rooting for me.”
The ex-teacher said that the family were grateful to everyone who had donated, and said it had allowed her to go on a “last minute holiday” to Florida.
Speaking from America, she added: “When chemo starts I won’t be able to travel so this is likely to be the last holiday I ever have abroad and what a trip to finish on.
“The children have not laughed and been able to relax like this in a long time.
“The money is to help create happy memories with my two daughters and my husband and we’ll be able to do that here.”
Marie Sidoli, who helped set up the JustGiving page, called the amount handed over “fantastic”.
“I know Dawn is completely overwhelmed by the kindness shown to them,” said the 36-year-old.
“For Dawn it isn’t about the money, the page is about how she can have an enjoyable time with her daughters and husband, Steve.”
Mrs Sidoli added: “Our main target is to raise the full amount of money and that is only possible if more people share it on social media.”
